On 6 December, the Latvian Parliament (Saeima) has voted to reject the signing of the United Nations Global Compact for Migration.
The debate was lengthy but Saeima, having been given autonomy over the decision in the cabinet, voted 43 to 31 to reject signing the Compact.
Latvia, like the US, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria and Switzerland, has rejected signing and objected the document.
Estonia and Lithuania will both not sign the declaration, however they will voice support for it at the Marrakech summit. The Latvian cabinet has stated that it will follow the result of the Saeima’s advisory vote.
