Ubuntu 19.10Â is about to be released today and we already have some updates on the upcoming Ubuntu 20.04 LTS release due in April 2020.
Ubuntu 20.04 is called Focal Fossa
As OMG! Ubuntu first noted, Ubuntu 20.04 has been codenamed âFocal Fossaâ.
The codenames of Ubuntu releases are composed of two words starting with the same letter. First world is usually and adjective while the second word is usually an animal species.
Focal is a common English world meaning âcenter or most important partâ. Fossa is a cat-like animal found in Madagascar.
Ubuntu 20.04 release date
The official release schedule for Ubuntu 20.04 has not been revealed yet. However, Ubuntu development follows a set pattern and based on that I can make an intelligent guess about Ubuntu 20.04 release.
Ubuntu 20.04 will be released on April 24, 2020.
How can I say that? I hope you know the logic behind Ubuntuâs version number and codename. Ubuntu follows a twenty six weeks release cycle for the October releases and a twenty seven weeks release cycle for the April release. There is an extra week here to compensate for the Christmas holidays.
Have you noticed that Ubuntu is always released on a Thursday? They surely follow the âno release Fridayâ strictly. So, is it safe to say that âif itâs Thursday, it must be Ubuntuâ?
Poor humor attempt aside, I hope you liked the little trivia about Ubuntu releases. Maybe you would also like the charming little movie âIf itâs Tuesday, this must be Belgiumâ.
What features to expect in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS?
The development of Ubuntu 20.04 hasnât started yet so Iâll have to make a few guesses again.
Ubuntu 20.04 is a long term support (LTS) release and it will be supported for five years for normal users and for ten years if you opt for the paid extended support maintenance.
Since itâs an LTS release, stability is of the upmost importance. Canonical team wonât try any radical changes here.
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS users would surely notice the visual changes and performance improvements but I donât think youâll see many changes between 19.10 and 20.04.
The experimental ZFS support introduced in 19.10 will remain in experimental but will surely see some improvements. GNOME 3.36 should make the cut along with Linux kernel 5.4.
Iâll update this article as the development progresses. Source: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Codename and Release Date – It’s FOSS
