Speaking to reporters on Monday, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) said 206 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in China, representing part of the 8739 new cases reported globally as of Monday morning.
Dr. Michael Ryan, the Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, told reporters that the organization was entering “uncharted territory” when it came to containing the global spread of COVID-19, but added he and the organization are hopeful the virus’ spread can still be contained.
He also added that in his opinion, any nation switching their efforts from containing the spread of COVID-19 to mitigating it’s damaging effects would be tantamount to “surrendering” control over the ultimate end-outcome of the virus’ spread.
