Iranās clandestine spy network has been threatening and blackmailing scores of journalists, even going so far as to detain and threaten the family members of these reporters, in order to ensure positive coverage in global media outlets, according to a new report that estimates at least 50 international journalists have been threatened in just the past year.
Iran uses its network of spies and its hardline judiciary to threaten journalists with punishment and in many cases detainĀ family members in order to use them as leverage against Western reporters, according toĀ a new reportĀ by Reporters Without Borders, or RSF, a watchdog group that advocates for freedom of the press.
Outlets such as the BBC and Voice of America have been subjected to threats and in some cases have had their computers hijacked by Iran, according to the report, which states that āall international media outlets with Persian-language services are concernedā about the Islamic Republicās often-secret efforts to blackmail reporters in order to gain positive headlines.
Iran rejected a U.S. demand for United Nations nuclear inspectors to visit military bases.
It also said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was unlikely to agree anyway, Reuters reports.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, last week pressed the IAEA to seek access to Iranian military bases to ensure that they were not concealing activities banned by the 2015 nuclear deal reached between Iran and six major powers.
U.S. President Donald Trump has called the nuclear pact ā negotiated under his predecessor Barack Obama ā āthe worst deal everā. In April, he ordered a review of whether a suspension of nuclear sanctions on Iran was in the U.S. interest.
Iranian government spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht responded at a weekly news conference broadcast on state television on Tuesday.
āIranās military sites are off limits,ā he said. āAll information about these sites are classified. Iran will never allow such visits. Donāt pay attention to such remarks that are only a dream.ā
