The American Civil Liberties Union is concerned that the White House interfered inĀ an ongoing FBI investigation, according toĀ a statement. Intervening inĀ a live probe “is incompatible withĀ democratic safeguards,” ACLU national security director Hina Shamsi said Monday.
“That’s especially the case when the investigation involves the president or his associates.”
Taking outĀ Comey while he oversees an investigation intoĀ Trump and Russia constitutes “political meddling withĀ law enforcement,” according toĀ Shamsi. This is “a recipe forĀ abuse ofĀ power,” the statement added.
Trump initially exclaimed he had “accepted the recommendation” ofĀ Justice Department officials toĀ fire Comey onĀ May 9. But days later, the president flipped the script byĀ stating that he was going toĀ fire Comey “regardless” ofĀ the DOJ’s advice.
