(TheAntiMedia) Days before being scheduled to become second-in-command to NYPD Commissioner William J. Bratton, the NYPD’s top uniformed officer has unexpectedly resigned from the police force.
Philip Banks III, who was the current chief of department, decision on Friday to resign has come as a shock to many in the department. It was announced only this past Tuesday that Banks was next in line for advancement as the first deputy commissioner.
Commissioner Bratton spoke with reporters outside of 1 Police Plaza and relayed; “The decision this morning came as a surprise to me.”
Chief Banks, a 28 year veteran of the department, had also been considered for the position of commissioner prior to Mr. Bratton holding the office.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio issued in part the following statement regarding Banks’ resignation.
“We were disappointed to hear of Chief Philip Banks’ personal decision to step down. He has served New York City admirably during his nearly 30 years on the force, and we were enthusiastic about the leadership and energy he would have brought to the position of First Deputy Commissioner.”
