“Don’t Go Out Alone” – Swedish Cops Warns Women After 4 Rapes In 4 Days

ā€œFeel free to walk on illuminated streets but not alone in alleys or parks…because officers cannot be in all places…”

“It doesn’t feel very safe”Ā exclaimed one young Swedish lady following reports of aĀ fourth rape in as many daysĀ Ā in the Swedish city of Uppsala.

“I even bought a self-defense spray yesterday.Ā I’ll have it in my hand when I go home myself.Ā If something should happen, you are always prepared.”

And her fears (and preparation) are well-placed it appears as even the police admit they can’t protect everyone, warning women to walk in groups and to ā€œthink how to behave.ā€

ā€œWomen in town should not be worried, but must think how to behave,ā€Ā the cityā€™s police force said in a statement to newspaperĀ Expressen.

ā€œFeel free to walk on illuminated streets and not alone in alleys or parks,ā€Ā they continued, adding that becauseĀ officersĀ ā€œcannot be in all places, both men and women have to think ahead.ā€

Womenā€™s rights groups criticized the warning, calling for a greater police presence on the streets:

ā€œReducing girlsā€™ freedom of movement is a serious development,ā€Ā activist Mariet Ghadimi toldĀ SVT NyheterĀ in March.

ā€œIt is a structural problem that restricts girlsā€™ freedom and rights, and in the long run affects women generally.ā€

These are not isolated incidents asĀ Swedenā€™s rape count has beenĀ risingĀ since 2005, and jumped ten percent in 2017 alone. Between 2005 and 2017, rapes nearly doubled and sexual molestation incidents more than doubled.
