Police fired tear gas at protesters in Quito on Wednesday, as anti-government demonstrations continued the Ecuadorian capital. Protesters with covering their faces can be seen throwing several tear gas canisters back at police and over buildings.
Footage shows one injured police officer being carried to a motorcycle and leaving the protest. Ecuador finds itself plunged into a wave of protest and social discontent after the government decreed a series of economic adjustment measures, including the elimination of fuel subsidies, in agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to obtain million-dollar loans.
The reform program, popularly known as “Paquetazo” also involves reducing the salaries of public employees and increasing taxes for some companies.
