AĀ fight broke outĀ in the West Virginia statehouse after Republicans displayed a poster that tied Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) to the 9/11 terror attacks.
Omar is one of two female Muslim members of Congress in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The display was apparently a part of āWV GOP Day,āĀ where the Republicans take over the rotunda.
DemocratsĀ objectedĀ to the display and got into an argument with the statehouse sergeant at arms Anne Lieberman, who was accused of saying, āall Muslims are terrorists.ā
Lieberman denied the charge and later resigned from the position.
Another staff member wasĀ reportedly injuredĀ in the fracas over the poster.
A Democratic delegate shared an image of the poster on his Twitter account.
āThis poster is in your Capitol on a booth sponsored byĀ @WVGOP,ā tweeted Delegate Mike Pushkin (D-Kanawha). āWhen someone shows you who they are, believe them,ā he added in quotes.
āI expressed my disgust about something like that, that really, I believe, points out a hatred and a mistrust of somebody because of their religious background, because of their religion,ā Pushkin said in the statehouse.
āWhile I may not agree with everything that is out there, I do agree that freedom of speech is something that we have to protect,ā said Delegate Dianna Graves (R-Kanawha).
Rep. OmarĀ denouncedĀ the poster in a tweet that connected the poster to a report of a man who wasĀ caught allegedly planning attacksĀ on media figures and politicians.
āNo wonder why I am on the āHitlistā of a domestic terrorist and āAssassinate Ilhan Omarā is written on my local gas stations,ā she commented. āLook no further, the GOPās anti-Muslim display likening me to a terrorist rocks in state capitols and no one is condemning them!ā
Omar ignored the condemnations from many in West Virginia against the poster.
