NORAD to Buzz DC with F-16s in Training Exercise
NORAD will conduct ācalibration flightsā over southeastern Washington, D.C., November 5.
The exercises will feature a ācivilian Beechcraft King Air aircraft flying patterns at approximately 4,500 feet above ground level, and two F-16 aircraft flying patterns at 5,500 feet,ā according to a press release from the agency.
There will also be a āground-based air defense systemā deployed to the area in connection with the training exercise. However, the release said no actual ordinance will be used for the drill.
āThese flights have been carefully planned and will be closely controlled,ā the release said. āThe flights are intended to assist in calibration of systems and equipment, and training, and will serve to refine and improve our ability to respond to unknown and potentially threatening aircraft.ā
The flights are a part of Operation Noble Eagle, which is NORADās response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. They will occur between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. EST.
