You know your electoral process is a joke when ______?
A. Donald Trump is the front-runner for the GOP nomination
B. The Democratic nomination is between a socialist and a criminal
C. Deez Nuts is polling close to double digits in three states
D. All of the above
While the correct answer is D, all of the above, the fact that a declared independent candidate, registered as Deez Nuts, is polling at 9% in NC, 8% in Minnesota and 7% in Iowa, shows exactly how many Americans feel about the U.S. political and electoral process.
The consistent and broad support for a candidate whose name is based on a line pulled from the original Chronic album, by Dr. Dre, is surprising to many. Although, according to The Daily Beast, there are numerous people legally named Deez Nuts residing across the United States. On Friday, Public Policy Polling, a real polling firm, released its latest polling data regarding the presidential race. The report stated that an unknown independent in the race was on the verge of breaking into the double digits in a number of states. When voters in North Carolina were asked whether they would vote for Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump or Deez Nuts, a declared independent candidate, in November 2016, the results left some people stunned.
According to Public Policy Polling:
Finally another declared independent candidate, Deez Nuts, polls at 9% in North Carolina to go along with his 8% in Minnesota and 7% in Iowa in our recent polling. Trump leads Clinton 40/38 when he’s in the mix.
The young man behind the officially registered name of Deez Nuts is 15-year-old Brady Olson. On July 26, he filed with the FEC to run for the President of the United States as Deez Nuts.
“When I heard about the Limberbutt McCubbins (a cat) story, I realized I could,” Olson told The Daily Beast. “The next step is to get some party nominations, like the Minnesota Independence Party or the Modern Whig Party,” Olson said. “It would also be great to find a VP, preferably McCubbins because the Nuts/McCubbins ticket sounds amazing.”
So how did a 15-year old from Iowa get the name Deez Nuts onto a state level national poll?
“It started because somebody emailed us under the name Deez Nuts,” says Jim Williams, an issue polling specialist a Public Policy Polling. “He said, ‘I’m Deez Nuts. I’m running. Here’s my filing statement. Would you poll me?’”
Williams thought “this is something Public Policy Polling would do,” so he squared Nuts off against Trump and Clinton in Minnesota a few weeks ago. He polled at 7 percent.
“I thought, ‘Let’s put this out. This’ll be funny,’” he says, and it was met with “mild interest.”
Although humorous at times, one need only take a look at the farce that America’s political/electoral process has become to realize the gravity of the situation.
The reality TV quality of this election cycle is undeniable, as the level of absurdity in U.S. politics has reached levels never before seen. As fewer and fewer people accept the standard duopoly of American party politics, the legitimacy of the system is itself now in question.
How long will American citizens continue to be appeased by bread and circuses?
With Flip-Flopping Trump leading the GOP field, while Socialist Sanders and Criminal Clinton stump for the Democratic nomination, is it any wonder Deez Nuts is surging in the polls?
The symbolic gesture of choosing Deez Nuts in a presidential poll cannot be overstated, as it could easily be considered a proverbial “f**k you” to the system at large.
