BALTIMORE: 13 high schools didn’t produce a single student who was basically PROFICIENT at math in 2017 – not one!

Today, this school graduates only about half of its 900 students. And a Project Baltimore investigation found, last year, not one of them tested proficient in any state exam.
Frederick Douglass is not alone. In 2016, six schools in Baltimore did not have a single student proficient in any state test.
Here’s how the testing works. High school students are tested by the state in math and English. Their scores place them in one of five categories – a four or five is considered proficient, one through three are not. At Frederick Douglass, last year, 185 students took the state math test. 165 (89 percent) fell into the lowest level.

Just one student approached expectations and scored a three.
Janise Lane is the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning at Baltimore City Schools.
Lane told Project Baltimore, these six schools are getting extra resources, increased teacher and principal training and sharper focus on student need – to increase test scores.
Former City Council member and CEO of Banneker Blake Charter School, Carl Stokes, said this shows the dire state of public education in many of our schools.
