Russia’s Shiveluch Volcano Wakes Up
The Shiveluch volcano erupted for the fourth time on Sunday morning, creating a seven kilometer-tall plume of ash, leading scientists to issue warnings for local residents and airlines.
The Shiveluch volcano, inĀ Russia’s far-eastern Kamchatka territory erupted onĀ Sunday morning forĀ the fourth time inĀ the pastĀ week, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) announced onĀ its website.
“Satellite data shows ash plumes drifted aboutĀ 225 km toĀ the north-east ofĀ the volcano.”
A plume ofĀ ash overĀ seven kilometers tall rose asĀ a result ofĀ the eruption, leading scientists toĀ issue a warning forĀ aircraft. The scientists also issued an ash alert forĀ Kamchatka’s residents, advising them toĀ stay indoors and and stock upĀ on food and water.The volcano is one ofĀ five currently erupting or restless inĀ Kamchatka, withĀ the others being Zhupanovsky, Klyuchevsoy, Karmysky and Bezymianny.
Kamchatka, part ofĀ the Pacific Ring ofĀ Fire, is known forĀ its active volcanoes, and Shiveluch, one ofĀ the region’s biggest, has been erupting sinceĀ 2009.
