Security issues continue to be a topic of discussion in relation to the potential influx of thousands of refugees from Gaza.

Recent lapses in the immigration security framework of Canada demonstrate the government’s inadequacy in recognizing potential threats.

OTTAWA — While new financial assistance will be available for Gazans coming to Canada, there is insufficient detail regarding any enhanced security measures intended to confirm that only valid claimants are allowed entry into the nation.

On Wednesday, Immigration Minister Marc Miller introduced a series of new measures designed to offer financial aid to those fleeing the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The initiatives comprise three months of free healthcare under the Interim Federal Health Program, complimentary study and work permits, and settlement services that provide language training, guidance on adapting to life in Canada, and help with job placement.

This amount is in addition to the previously allocated $140 million intended for humanitarian support for individuals impacted by Israel’s continuous military actions aimed at dismantling Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist groups in the region.

“We remain deeply committed to supporting Palestinians during the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and are concerned about the well-being of all people in the region,” Miller said in a statement.

As Canada gears up to accept more than 5,000 refugees from Gaza, there are growing concerns regarding the capacity of the nation’s immigration system to effectively screen individuals who may have malicious intentions.
