This drug has 4 and 5 black box warnings. Black Box warnings are related to death / mortality. It is most deadly to those over 50, the people most likely to need hospitalisation due to COVID infection. It was just approved for COVID this year but it is a Arthritis Drug.
It is an oral pill. it comes in 4 mg size.
Black Box warnings:
Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
Lymphoma Malignancy AKA cancer
Major adverse Cardio vascular events: Heart Death, Non fatal heart attacks, and non fatal strokes.
Thrombosis – Blood Clotting, Deep Vein Thrombosis, Pulmonary Embolisms (blood clots in the lungs, and Arterial Thromboses.
Baricitinib, also known as Olumiant, is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It’s a type of drug known as a Janus kinase JAK inhibitor. It works by blocking the action of Janus kinase enzymes, which are involved in the inflammation that causes the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
Baricitinib is not recommended if you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
Your doctor may decide not to prescribe baricitinib if you’ve had or have any of the following:
- an active infection
- repeated or serious previous infections
- shingles
- disease of the lungs, liver or kidneys
- heart problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism)
- cancer
- very low white or red blood cell count.
