Hindu extremists have become increasingly bold in their attacks against India’s religious minorities since Prime Minister Modi took office in 2014. Modi and the BJP promote a brand of Hindu nationalism dedicated to eradicating India’s religious minorities. They accomplish this in a variety of ways, notably through mob violence and social intimidation.

Accountability Is Needed

It is incumbent upon the Indian government to prosecute the violent criminals attacking India’s vulnerable religious minorities. The Indian government has, over the past several years, shown a consistent lack of interest in prosecuting these criminals. Rather, the authorities often choose to ignore the charges brought by the victims against their attackers in favor of bringing trumped-up charges against the victims themselves.

This immunity from criminal consequences must change if Indian Christians are ever to enjoy the freedom to worship as they choose.
